For more than four years, GLC has partnered with the American Medical Technologists — a certification association representing laboratory technicians, medical assistants, and phlebotomy technicians, amongst other allied health professionals — on projects ranging from a content strategy to a marketing plan to the launch of a new magazine, Pulse.
Earlier this month a ABC News article highlighted lab workers as “the unseen warriors fighting the coronavirus.” Today, we’re honored to kick off Laboratory Appreciation Week (April 19-25) by highlighting the courageous work these lab technicians are performing on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an interview with Kathy Cilia, CAE, Deputy Executive Director, AMT, we learned a bit more about how AMT is responding to the current medical — and membership — climate.
What is it that people should know about lab techs but don’t?
Cilia: More than 7 billion clinical lab tests are performed in the U.S. each year. While occasionally their role is highlighted in healthcare like times like these, most don’t know or realize the vital role they play in clinical decision-making.
How is AMT supporting members during this time?
Cilia: While the immediate AMT response has been to manage what we could act quickly on, going forward, there likely will be more action to be taken on behalf of members. Some immediate actions to relieve stress on members has been:
- to extend certification renewal deadlines for those who need it so they would not lose certification at a time when they are too busy to renew or are furloughed from their jobs.
- offer free courses on topics that help members adjust to changed work environments.
- open online communities for members to share information and thoughts with peers.
How will AMT celebrate lab tech week given the circumstances?
Cilia: We are doing social media giveaways for Laboratory Appreciation Week and sending out emails of support. We’ve created a social media profile frame to recognize members hard work. We also have appreciation downloads and products available on our website.
